If you’re planning your Japan itinerary, make sure to include at least one full day in Nara. Even a single day is enough to enjoy the city’s highlights, from historic temples to serene gardens, free-roaming deer, and local culinary delights. Arriving early lets you enjoy the calm mornings, have more space for photos, and explore the city at a relaxed pace.

How to Get to Nara

Nara is easy to reach from both Kyoto and Osaka, making it a perfect day trip from Kyoto or Osaka.

From Kyoto

If you’re coming from Kyoto, it’s worth planning your morning carefully before heading to Nara. Once my Kyoto travel guide is live, you’ll find all the tips you need to make the most of your visit. You can take the JR Nara Line (Miyakoji Rapid Service) (~45 minutes) or the Kintetsu Kyoto Line (~35 minutes), which stops closer to Nara Park. Both trains are frequent and reliable. Starting early ensures a calm and relaxed visit.

From Osaka

Coming from Osaka? You can easily reach Nara in about 40–50 minutes, and my Osaka guide has tips to help you plan your journey efficiently. Take the JR Yamatoji Line (~50 minutes) or the Kintetsu Nara Line (~40 minutes) from Osaka Namba. Early arrival allows you to enjoy the city before it gets busy.

No matter which city you travel from, a Nara day trip itinerary is completely manageable, and you can comfortably see all the highlights without rushing.

Top Attractions and Experiences in Nara

Here’s a complete guide to the best things to do in Nara in one day, including temples, gardens, museums, parks, cultural experiences, and local food.

Nara Park & Walking Trails

Nara Park is famous for its hundreds of free-roaming deer. Walking here is free, and if you want to feed the deer, you can buy special deer crackers (shika senbei) for around ¥200, but it’s not something you have to do, walking the trails and appreciating the scenery is just as rewarding. Many visitors choose to skip the feeding, like we did and that’s perfectly fine too.
